Happy couple celebrating after their wedding with a beautiful backyard background

Planning Your Dream Outdoor Wedding in Metro West Boston

June 25, 2023

Hello, Metro West Bostonians! If you're looking to plan a backyard wedding in the area, look no further. Having planned my own backyard wedding, I hope to share tips and tricks so you can learn from my experience (and mistakes).  Let’s start with the basics…

First, consider the size of your backyard. If you have a large backyard, you may have plenty of space for the ceremony and reception.  Ideally these spaces are separate so you don’t have to deal with swapping the ceremony items for reception tables.  However, if your backyard is smaller, you may consider renting a nearby farm or park space. There are several beautiful community spaces West of Boston like Gore Farms in Waltham or The Pierce House in Lincoln.

Next, think about the logistics. You'll need to consider things like the ceremony site, seating, tables, and catering for the reception. Renting equipment such as tents, tables, and chairs can be a more affordable option than buying everything outright. If using a caterer for the reception, be sure to ask what they do and don’t provide.  My caterer provided all the dishware, but not glassware.  So I bought the wine glasses and matching glasses at DollarTree for $50 total.

When it comes to decorating your backyard wedding, think about the natural beauty of the space. Adding simple touches like string lights or floral arrangements from your yard can add a beautiful touch without breaking the bank.

Lastly, be sure to have a backup plan. The weather in Boston can be unpredictable, so it's important to have a plan in case of rain or other weather-related issues. You could consider renting a tent or having an indoor space available just in case.  For my sister's wedding we cleaned out our finished garage, draped chiffon and edison lights across the ceiling.  This made for an intimate and surprisingly beautiful reception space.

By considering the size of your backyard, logistics, and decorations, you can plan a memorable outdoor wedding that reflects your style and stays within your budget. Thank you for reading, and happy wedding planning!
